Objective for 2010, actions

Working towards a natural Pilat, from the peaks to the gateway towns

Landscape identity

PilatThe Park and the communities seek to develop and/or recreate a landscape identity for each sector of Pilat, thus, consolidating the identity of the massif in all its diversity: sites and viewpoints, a balance between wide open spaces and enclosed spaces, not forgetting the architecture, the rural heritage etc.

Natural heritage sites and common nature sites protected

The territorial project aims to preserve not only the natural heritage sites known as “Remarkable Nature” (referring to 5 Priority Ecological Sites) but also to ensure the quality of the more common environment: the “Ordinary nature”.  Human activity throughout history has shaped and moulded this ‘ordinary nature’ which contributes to the quality of life and the development of certain economic sectors.
The sustainable development of agriculture and forestry will enable both the improvement of the landscape and a balance between wooded areas, crops, grasslands and hedges etc.

The link between the environment and town planning

The Natural image that Pilat wishes to promote presupposes certain requirements regarding the quality of the environment. For this, the Park ensures that it will:

  • Prevent and reduce pollution: noise pollution, water pollution, waste, advertising, quarries, motor traffic on the roads and major infrastructures.
  • Ensure the consistency of the territorial project particularly through the urban development documents, including the necessary evaluation of any actions undertaken.

Developing Pilat’s resources into economic assets

“Sustainable” agriculture and forestry

Agriculture and forestry play an important role in the preservation of the “ordinary Nature”, but they also contribute economically to the area.

Objective 2010That’s why local officials have decided to develop sustainable agriculture and forestry, which maintains a dense and vibrant rural environment and provides jobs, while preserving the natural resources and the landscapes. (This follows through to the development of quality products, the consistency of agricultural and forestry policies with the territorial project and the development of dendro-energy.)

Businesses and communities acting for their environment

BeerAs part of its territorial project, Pilat hopes to involve its commercial, industrial and artisanal businesses in working towards environmental performances alongside the competent economic collectives.

It basically involves integrating the environmental dimension and economic development in such a way that the respect and improvement of the environment will no longer be considered a limiting factor but instead, a new opportunity for development.

This dynamic goes hand in hand with a policy of energy conservation and the promotion of local and renewable energy.

Nature Tourism

Pilat tourism is founded upon the richness and diversity of its territories, its sites and its natural and cultural heritage.

The Park hopes to develop  the exploration of this richness by developing a stay tourism based around nature. The increase in people visiting (applying the European principles of sustainable tourism) will contribute significantly to the economic development of the massif.
This will involve the improvement and growth of tourist accommodation, the marketing of tourism products and the cooperation of the organisation for tourism professionals to reinforce the identity of the massif.

A more dynamic, welcoming and open Pilat

A life full of culture

CultureSince its inception, the Park has contributed to the cultural life of the territory. In the years to come, it will continue its cultural programme to promote Pilat, taking into account the new local context: it will promote the rich cultural life that can only be found in Pilat and will offer support to those involved in keeping the local culture alive.

  • From the rural area to the gateway towns, Pilat will direct this cultural action towards more openness and reciprocation.

Education in the territory

Educating the public about the territory is to be a major issue in the coming years,  and the Park’s education programme will be aimed at adults as well as the young.

It will raise awareness of the richness of the massif, of the value of the project, and will help them better understand Pilat, by sharing the territorial project with them and thus fostering eco-citizen attitudes and behaviour. This will come about by working with schools, organising public events, creating a resource centre and developing a communication policy.

Intermunicipal cohesion

In order to foster a real synergy between the collectives, the territory project plans to strengthen the partnership between the intermunicipal organisations inside the Park. It also plans to ensure the coherence of any policies made both inside and outside the Park area.

Sharing and solidarity

With its vast experience, one of the Park’s missions is to share its technical and scientific know-how as well as its work methods with other collectives and other territories.
Contributing to the development of jobs in the area while encouraging the participation of the disadvantaged members of society is representative of the other axis of solidarity expressed in the Park Charter.
