A unique local collective

The Pilat Regional nature park was established in 1974 to preserve and enhance its natural resources while contributing to local development.

 Parc du Pilat’s mission

Like all  French Regional nature Parks,  the Parc du Pilat’s mission is to :

  • Protect the natural and cultural heritage of the region, through a management that is adapted to the natural environments and landscapes,
  • Ensure the care and education of the public as well as providing information,
  • Contribute to the economic, social, and cultural development and quality of life,
  • Contribute to the spatial-planning of the region,
  • Carry out experimental and exemplary actions.

Not to be confused with the National Parks

Unlike the regional nature parks which are looking for sustainable development in their areas, national parks are designed primarily to protect animal and plant species that are endangered. They are generally uninhabited sanctuaries. Strict regulations limit human activities inside these areas. Under the leadership of the Ministry for the Environment the national Park officers enjoy the same power as the police to enforce these regulations.
