The Priority Ecological Site of the Crêts

The moors at the summit
Presenting you with the “highest mountain” of Pilat!
A series of rounded peaks and pointed bare rock give the massif its profile. Beyond the 900m point, at the montane-level, the beeches and firs should reign supreme.
However, there aren’t any. Ancient clearings, now abandoned pastures, and coniferous forests have fashioned a new, more diverse landscape. On the poor, acidic soils, the vast moors deploy a procession of dwarf shrubs: cytisus oromediterraneus, mountain cranberry, blueberry, millet.
Matgrass cover the dense sloping tufts, accompanied by the yellow hawkbit –rare cousin of the Dandelion- and meum athamanticum (Alpine fennel) with its little white petals. Around the Jasserie, grasslands continue to be mowed.
Habitats for species of endangered birds
These open habitats are essential to many species of endangered birds: the red-backed Shrike, the woodlark, the hen-harrier and the short-toed eagle.
