The Chirats, a geological oddity

Les chirats
Chirats form the greater part of the gray stone landscape found on the steep slopes of the Crêts. These amazing masses of boulders were formed in the Quaternary 20-30,000 years ago when Pilat was bordered by the immense Rhône glacier.
The freezing of the rock caused it to shatter into large blocks. Then, this mass, cemented by the ice, moved like a glacier. The only other place this unique geological phenomenon can be found is in the Appalachians. This unique geological phenomenon became a symbol of Pilat.
- Along with the beech tree and the fir-tree the chirat are a part of the Park logo.
