The Park’s gateway towns

In a measure of “solidarity” between town and countryside, the Parc du Pilat [Pilat Park] maintains a special relationship with some of its urban periphery.

The Park’s gateway towns

The towns and Park share the same origin

The relationship between town and countryside shares the same origin as the creation of the Pilat Regional Nature Park. Indeed, the Parc du Pilat was born in 1974, from the collective realisation of the urban residents of their commitment to the Pilat massif, its rich natural areas and its spectacular scenery.

Preservation of the Park

The first person to put out the idea of creating a Pilat regional nature park was Claude Berthier, a teacher at the lycée Claude Fauriel, St. Etienne since 1946. Twenty years later, it was Dr. Bernard Muller, a doctor with the St. Etienne hospitals, who took up the idea. They managed to convince the people of Pilat of the quality of their environment and of the need to preserve it.

Park and towns working together for a greater good

The Park and the gateway towns have an interdependent relationship. They are two inseparable elements of a complex geographical entity, by making up an environment which contributes to the quality of life of each inhabitant. Together they form a whole.
